Current and future possibilities of Medical Informatics

Table of Contents

1 Introduction

There is also a big demand for improved health care and some of this demand can be met by using medical technology. The new technology also opens up for new markets for example what is mentioned in (International Space University Workshop. 1999. TELEMEDICINE IN THE 21ST CENTURY: Opportunities for Citizens, Society and Industry.):

  • Personal sensor technology, for integration into fixed and mobile consumer products (e.g. home computers and personal digital assistants);
  • Communications infrastructure, used in health maintenance and disease prevention;
  • Centralised diagnostic services, virtually connecting the patient and the service provider, reducing the need for travel;
  • Universal medical databases, available to the service provider and patient alike.

Medicine has come a long way up to where it is today. Still there are a lot of difficult challenges that needs to be solved. From the management of information related to patients like patient journals, incorporating new devices and software into the health care and to using information systems in new ways in medical research and education.
